Lecture notes on the Constitution of the United States, ca. 1842-1843.

Bound volume containing notes in the hand of Henry Reed, for a series of lectures he gave on the Constitution of the United States; two pencilled notes, apparently in Reed's hand, contain the dates 1842 (Lecture 14, p. 1) and 1843 (Lecture 6, p. 2). The lectures are numbered 2 to 16. The leaves are paginated within each lecture, and a header on each page identifies the lecture number, and a topic, usually a part of the Constitution, except for Lecture 2, which is entitled: Formation of the Union, continued. The parts of the Constitution covered by the other lectures are the Preamble; and Article I, Sections 1-6, Section 8 (clauses 1-4, and 18), and Sections 9 and 10. The sets of lecture notes range from 3 to 6 pages long. (In lectures 2, 9 and 13 the leaves have been bound in the incorrect order.) The style of the notes is telegraphic, arranged as a list of points. The notes for Lecture 13 include an additional leaf that is apparently from a different manuscript, written in a full narrative style; it concerns the meeting of tradesmen and mechanics at the Green Dragon in Boston in 1788, in connection with the ratification of the Constitution, and quotes from a speech by Daniel Webster. According to a note bound in at front, dated 1913, when the Henry Reed papers were initially processed, these lecture notes were considered to be related to the lectures that Reed gave at the Smithsonian Institution, probably in the 1840s, which were published after his death under the title: Two lectures on the history of the American union (Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1856).
